Introducing Cue Pro: Next-Generation ADR, Dubbing, and Foley Workflows in Pro Tools
June 17th, 2025
Revolutionize your ADR, dubbing, and foley workflows with Cue Pro — the first fully integrated cueing and overlay tool built directly into Pro Tools. Say goodbye to clunky clip group workarounds and hello to seamless, powerful collaboration.
ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) is a cornerstone of modern post-production. Whether replacing noisy on-set audio, refining performance, or updating dialogue, ADR allows actors to re-record lines in perfect sync with picture. Traditionally, Dialogue Editors or ADR Supervisors prepare detailed cue sheets — a process called spotting or cueing — that guide talent and engineers during recording. These cues appear as overlays on the video, providing precise timing, text, and performance notes.
Until now, many ADR, dubbing, and foley workflows in Pro Tools have relied on cumbersome third-party setups, manual file exchanges, or limited clip group hacks. Cue Pro, developed by Non-Lethal Applications, changes everything — delivering powerful, fully integrated cueing and overlay capabilities right inside Pro Tools, no extra setup or project management required.
Built for Pro Tools — In Collaboration with Avid
Non-Lethal Applications has been a pioneer in synchronised video playback and cueing tools since 2011, with a global user base — from Composers, Conductors, Sound Designers, and Mixers using Video Sync for accurate DAW-synchronised video playback; to Recording Studios relying on ADR Master Studio for enhanced cue recording; and Dialogue, ADR, and Foley Supervisors using ADR Master Editor as their most versatile & trusted cueing solution.
In 2021, they became the first third-party developer to support Avid’s Satellite Link protocol across their product line.
Continuing their trailblazing work, Non-Lethal Applications is now the first third-party developer to enhance Pro Tools’ Avid Video Engine (AVE) with Cue Pro:
-
Cue Pro renders ADR overlays directly into the Pro Tools video output — no separate video timeline, no Satellite Link, or MIDI sync required.
-
A single Cue Pro Connect plug-in on a Pro Tools aux track links everything — loading, saving, and cue data management happen transparently inside the Pro Tools session.
-
Timeline, selections, playback, and scrubbing are fully linked between Cue Pro and Pro Tools, allowing smooth, unified operation.
This means less setup, fewer moving parts, and tighter integration for ADR, dubbing, and foley workflows than ever before.
Why Legacy Clip Group ADR Cueing Workflows in Pro Tools Needed Upgrading?
Clip Groups are a powerful feature in Pro Tools, originally designed to bundle together audio and MIDI clips and label them for easier management — especially useful in music production for arranging, looping, or moving & copying sections as a block.
However, before purpose-built tools like ADR Master or Cue Pro, many post-production teams essentially hacked Clip Groups to manage ADR cues. This involved creating blank clip groups for each line of dialogue and embedding critical information — like dialogue text, reason codes, or cue numbers — directly into the Clip Group’s name.
While clever, this workaround stretched Clip Groups far beyond their intended use. They were never designed to handle empty Timeline sections or act as a robust ADR cue management system, which leads to a range of limitations and inefficiencies.
Let’s explore some of the inherent limitations of using Clip Groups for ADR cueing:
- No Visual Overlays During Cueing
Clip groups don’t support live visual overlays. Overlays can only be seen after the entire session is cued and exported as MIDI or text files for other programs to import. This disconnect makes it difficult to confirm cue accuracy in real time, forcing users to rely solely on audio timing, which is less precise.
- No Live Editing or Viewing of ADR Cue Sheets During Sessions
Cue sheets can’t be followed or updated live during recording or spotting. Corrections require exporting cue sheets, manually checking for errors, then returning to the Pro Tools session to find and fix each cue—by referencing the cue sheets manually. This slow, error-prone cycle of exporting, importing, and re-exporting wastes valuable time and increases the chance of mistakes or delivering the wrong version of the cue sheets.
- No Real-Time Digital Sharing or Collaboration
Clip groups don’t support sharing updated cue sheets digitally during sessions. This limitation hinders instant collaboration between ADR supervisors, dialogue editors, and other participants, who often have to rely on printed copies or third-party translations of text exports, slowing down communication and decision-making.
- Inefficient, Paper-Heavy Workflows
The absence of live digital sharing leads to printing cue sheets, which is costly and environmentally unfriendly. Even if notes are made digitally during a recording session, 'As recorded’ text changes require manual updating by hand after the session.
- No Ability for Last-Minute Text Changes During Recording
Once recording starts, clip groups don’t allow session participants to edit or correct cue text on the fly. Any mistakes require stopping the session and going through cumbersome offline fixes. This can be particularly disruptive during a recording session for both the dialogue editor and recording engineer as they need to focus on keeping the recording session running.
- Cumbersome Cue Creation Process and Prone to Errors
Scrubbing dialogue requires locating audio on the dialogue guide track, then moving the selection to the relevant ADR cue track—adding unnecessary steps and increasing the chance of placing cues on incorrect tracks or times. There’s also no way to scrub-trim cue start and end points directly for timing precision.
- Limited Text Length and Formatting Options
Clip groups restrict dialogue letter count, making it hard to fit full lines. Special formatting like bold, italics, or strikethrough isn’t supported. The clip naming window displays only the first 44 characters, requiring tedious scrolling or arrow key navigation to edit longer text. The lack of full stops at the end of lines, due to naming limitations, also breaks natural reading flow.
- No Structured or Fixed Fields for Cue Metadata
There are no dedicated fields for reason codes, notes, or other ADR attributes. Instead, a complex naming convention must be memorised and manually applied to encode this information into clip name & tracks, increasing the risk of lost or inconsistent data & further reducing available dialogue text per cue. Reconforming sessions can add suffixes to clip group names, potentially truncating dialogue and adding unwanted text.
- Fiddly Clip Group Editing and Merging
Splitting clip groups leaves duplicate text that must be manually cleaned up, and merging only works if it’s a seamless join. Otherwise, merging requires deleting subsequent clips and extending the first, which is tedious and error-prone.
- Imprecise Cue Timing Due to Frame Boundaries
Clip groups can be created outside the video frame boundaries, leading to cues that start too early or too late, impacting the precision of overlays and timing during recording.
- Session Clutter and Risk of Lost Cues
Using clip groups for ADR cues clutters the clip list, making navigation between dialogue and ADR cues confusing. Overuse of ungroup hotkeys during reconform sessions can accidentally ungroup and lose ADR clip groups. Also, there’s no automatic assignment of default cue numbers, making it hard to identify missing cues after re-conforms.
- No Multi-Language Support for Cues
Clip groups don’t support managing multiple languages for the same characters within a project, complicating international ADR workflows.
Cue Pro overcomes all of these issues with an elegant, integrated solution — supporting direct legacy clip group imports, while offering a vastly more powerful way to create, edit and manage ADR cues.
Designed for Every Stage of the Process
Cue Pro is perfect for:
- Dialogue Editors, ADR & Foley Supervisors — streamlined cueing and spotting
- Recording Studios — efficient, overlay-driven ADR, foley, and dubbing sessions
